Since 1943, the White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company has been a critical part of our northeastern Baltimore County community. Most of us knew it as the Cowenton Volunteer Fire Company. We remember the heroic response to the Chase train crash in 1987, as well as the company’s work with countless fires and natural disasters that have threatened lives over eight decades.
The Baltimore Sun reported tonight that General Motors will transfer six acres to the White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company to build a new station on Philadelphia Road. The old location is crowded and outdated, and this announcement brings certainty to the future of this venerable fire company.
Our office contacted General Motors several times while the donation was being considered. Last year, Councilwoman Cathy Bevins and I brokered discussions with the Central Alarmers that led to a merger with the White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company. This strengthened both organizations and will hopefully lead to construction of a new station in the near future.
I would like to thank Kevin Palmer and Rick Blubaugh for their leadership at the company, the men and women who have served over many decades, and General Motors for its donation that will provide a new home for the White Marsh firefighters. Please consider supporting the company if you have not already done so.
