I have never experienced anything like the coronavirus pandemic. Neither have most Americans. The shutdown of schools, buildings, restaurants, and virtually every other venue of public life is unprecedented in my lifetime.
On Monday night, I voted to extend the county’s emergency declaration by an additional 30 days. The Baltimore County Council stands ready to work with the County Executive to respond to this pandemic.
What is clear is that the pandemic will define the county for years to come. The operations of local government, already changing to address trends such as the growth in our senior population, will be transformed. The coronavirus will also likely push the United States into a recession, which certainly affects the county in many ways. Revenue will lessen just as the need increases for jobs and benefits.
For now, Baltimore Countians are responding as a community. Let us hope this spirit continues.
