One in four Baltimore County residents will be a senior citizen next year, according to estimates from the Department of Aging.  Indeed, Baltimore County has one of the largest senior populations on the East Coast, requiring leaders to step up planning for services that can accommodate our older residents.

In 2020, there will be more seniors than schoolchildren in the county.  That means reevaluating how we budget for senior centers, nutrition, transportation, and other services–and how we develop communities.  The last point is particularly important.

In fast-growing Towson, I have aggressively pushed for a new circulator to improve mobility.  Such a system would allow residents of communities with a large number of seniors, such as Tabco Towers, to better access destinations across Towson.

Throughout my district, I have supported developments that target senior citizens, and that will be my focus as we look what happens with large parcels such as the Gerst Farm in Perry Hall.

One thing is clear.  Baltimore County’s booming senior population will require a new approach, and planning must begin now.
