With the revitalization of Downtown Towson well underway, one of my priorities has been to make our county seat a model for mobility. We simply do not have the ability to build any more roads in such a dense community, so we need to encourage more walking, biking, and transit where it makes sense.
We have made great progress over the past three years. Consider the following:
- The County Council passed legislation that requires bike parking for most new construction in Downtown Towson.
- With assistance from the state, bike lanes are being established along some of our busiest corridors, such as Goucher Boulevard.
- Several traffic calming projects have been completed throughout Greater Towson.
- The Greater Towson Committee is taking the lead on recommendations for a Towson Circulator.
I am also proud of the work being done by other institutions throughout Greater Towson. On Friday, Towson University will dedicate its new pedestrian bridge along Osler Drive. The bridge will allow students and other walkers to safely cross a busy corridor, and it should lighten any gridlock in this area.
These initiatives will prove essential as Towson absorbs new growth over the coming decade.
