Much of the nation’s attention is focused on school safety. While the debate over firearms continues in Annapolis and Washington, I believe there are some important steps that can be taken locally to improve security at our schools and other public places.
First, we need to expand the use of School Resource Officers. I have advocated for more School Resource Officers, particularly at large campuses such as Perry Hall Middle and High Schools.
Second, we need to continue to expand the use of technology. Following the shooting at Perry Hall High School, the County Council approved more than $13 million to improve technology. Police officers are better equipped to monitor activity at our schools, and there are more robust verification systems for visitors at our campuses.
Third, we need stronger discipline policies. I am particularly concerned about problem students, and have addressed this issue with the Board of Education and its staff.
And finally, better communication is needed between school personnel and parents.
I will continue to make school safety a priority for all campuses in the Fifth District.
