I am pleased to announce that the Fiscal Year 2018 budget will include $7 million in funding to plan for a new northeastern middle school. The proposed 1,500-seat school will be constructed at a site to be determined by the Baltimore County Board of Education. An addition will be built at Pine Grove Middle School to accommodate between 200 and 300 students.
The construction of a new middle school is my top priority in northeastern Baltimore County. In 2012 and 2016, the County Council downzoned thousands of acres of land to lighten school overcrowding, but there simply needs to be additional classroom space to accommodate the growth in enrollment. I have been working with parents for the past two years to push for a new middle school.
I am very excited by this announcement. The school will not open until 2021, but we are at least advancing in the right direction.
