In June, the County Executive’s office announced the pending purchase of a park site at the Radebaugh property in eastern Towson. The retail shop would remain, and Baltimore County would redevelop the site into a new community park.
At the time, I applauded this announcement. This would be the first new park in eastern Towson in two decades, providing green space for the densely-populated neighborhoods along Burke Avenue.
Unfortunately, five months later, the property has yet to be purchased. My understanding is that there are concerns about demolition costs for the greenhouses at the property. At least one independent appraisal has confirmed that the county’s price tag for demolition is way too high.
Baltimore County has millions of dollars in unused Program Open Space funding from the state. It is time for the county to follow through on the commitment it made to the residents of Towson in June: preserve the Radebaugh site, and implement a plan for redeveloping the site into a beautiful new park for eastern Towson.
